土壤中的硼以BO32- 的状态被植物吸收。硼能促进花粉的萌发和花粉管的生长,植物柱头和花柱中含有较多的硼,因此硼与植物的生殖过程有密切关系,有促进开花结实的作用。另外,硼能改善氧气的供应,促进根系的发育和豆科植物根瘤的形成。硼的作用机理,迄今尚无定论,目前在植物体内尚未发现特殊含硼化合物,有人认为硼能与游离状态的糖形成络合物,使糖容易输导,但这种说法并没有充分的实验依据。植物缺硼时根系不发达,顶端停止生长并逐渐死亡,叶色暗绿,叶片肥厚、皱缩,植株矮化,茎及叶柄易开裂。

钼通常以MoO42-的形式为植物吸收,其生理作用集中在氮素代谢方面。钼又是硝酸还原酶的金属组分,在由NADH或ADPH转运电子给NO2的过程中,起着传递电子的作用。植物缺钼的共同症状是植株矮小,生长受抑制,叶片失绿、枯萎以致坏死。豆科植物缺钼根瘤发育不良,固氮能力弱和不能固氮。
